When our littlest angel first came to us at 3 weeks old, we stared at her a lot, and we still wonder at how "fearfully and wonderfully" she is made. Her personality is already so obvious. When she slept, we noticed that her hands were constantly in motion, so were her feet. Unfortunately, she would hit herself in the face with her hands or somehow started herself from sleep which didn't lead to any sleep for the whole family. We loved to watch her "conduct" in her sleep when both arms would go up telling the instruments to get ready and then they would slowly come down or maybe just one arm would come down. Either way those arms spent a lot of time in the air and/or beside her ears going behind her head.
At first we tried the sleep sack which worked beautifully to help her sleep. It provided a measure of security because she was loosely wrapped with her arms free, but after a few weeks, we noticed that her sleep was still disturbed, so we tried the Miracle Blanket swaddling blanket, given to us by a friend.
Wrapped up like a little pink burrito, she slept. Bliss. She still, of course, grunts as she sleeps and moves around in her sleep as she tries to get her arms free to conduct that magical sleep symphony that only she hears. Maybe she wants to conduct the sounds of the house;I don't know. One night my husband walked in and immediately laughed silently since she was still asleep in the cradle beside our bed. She was a little frustrated because she one little hand freed and up to her chin, but not the other. The look of confusion on her face said it all. "Hey, I used to have one of these things waving around and the other to stick in my mouth. What happened!"
Since then, she has made it her mission to escape the swaddle blanket before she is fully awake after every nap and every morning. When she is fully awake and, of course, totally out of the blanket, she grins at us with a wide-open gummy grin that just screams, "I'm sooooo cute. Look what I did to your little sleep prison! :-)" It's really adorable. The blanket is wrapped around her stomach. That's it. Now she just chews on one end of the blanket as if to show all of us who us really in charge.
This last weekend we found a different type of swaddle blanket on clearance. This one had velcro. No way could she get out of this. The first time she slept in it she woke crying out of a little fear because she couldn't free her hands. In the last three days that we've had, she had totally mastered that swaddle blanket. When I walked in this morning, she was totally free, chewing on the edge of the blanket, and grinning at me with a wide-open grin.
